Strengthening airport safety through training to identify and report human trafficking
Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety and security through a new partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as part of the Blue Lightning Initiative, a national program focused on preventing human trafficking across the transportation system.
By joining the initiative, PSP is taking proactive steps to ensure airport employees and partners are trained to recognize potential indicators of human trafficking and respond appropriately. The training empowers frontline staff who interact with travelers every day to identify concerning behavior and follow established reporting protocols that connect tips directly to federal law enforcement.
“At PSP, safety is more than a responsibility; it’s our top priority,” said Victoria Carpenter, Interim Executive Director of Aviation at Palm Springs International Airport. “By equipping our team with even more tools to protect travelers and our community, passengers can feel confident knowing PSP is committed to keeping them safe.”
”Airports are the front lines of the aviation sector, and their employees are uniquely positioned to recognize and respond to potential indicators of human trafficking,” said Julie Abraham, Director of the Office of International Transportation and Trade, U.S. Department of Transportation. “By joining BLI, PSP is demonstrating leadership and a strong commitment to safeguarding travelers and strengthening the aviation sector’s ability to prevent and disrupt this crime.”
“Human trafficking is a hidden crime that relies on everyday systems to operate,” said Tasha Reid Hippolyte, Acting Deputy Assistant Director of the DHS Center for Countering Human Trafficking. “The Blue Lightning Initiative empowers frontline transportation professionals with the knowledge and tools to identify warning signs and safely report concerns. Palm Springs International Airport’s participation demonstrates how public-private partnerships can play a vital role in disrupting exploitation.”
Human trafficking is a crime that often goes unseen, and transportation hubs can play a critical role in identifying and stopping it. Through the Blue Lightning Initiative, PSP employees receive specialized training to spot potential warning signs and quickly report concerns using established DHS protocols, including the DHS Tip Line at (866) 347-2423.
In addition to employee training, travelers will see awareness messaging throughout the terminal to encourage vigilance across the airport environment.
The Blue Lightning Initiative is part of the DHS Blue Campaign and is led jointly by DHS and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
PSP joins a growing network of airports nationwide that are voluntarily taking extra steps to protect passengers and help prevent exploitation.
